Sunday guests in the W B Neal home included Mr and Mrs Andy Neal and children from Sioux City and Mr and Mrs Tom Martin and children. Many locals hosted visitors from Arizona Minnesota and Canada with remarks on travel and sights along Lake Superior the North Shore and Itasca. Road trips included Minnesota's Mesabi Iron Range and a Pine Bend Chapel work camp in Minnesota with Indian Reservation activities and Twin Lakes recreation.
Hiram I. Ellis of 585 12th SE, Akron native born in Hawarden in 1884, returned home to Akron after treatment in Salem Memorial Hospital for a broken arm from a May 24 fall. Cast removed Tuesday. He spent his Akron childhood until 1908 when his family moved to Oregon and now asks Akron friends to write. He is handicapped in writing by arthritis.
Pleasant Hill E U B Church notes Pastor Len Humston reports no services August 20. On August 27, 1961 Sunday school and evening worship scheduled at 7 30 p m and 8 30 p m respectively. Way Back Yonder recalls ten years ago when A. H. S. grid aqued began football practice under Coach Ron Henriksen and a drive to free Akron Hospital of debt. Notes report clergy moves, marriages, births, and local events including a doctor of education degree for Albert Lemen, a Red Caps loss, and junior baseball league results.
A river flood control project for the lower 35 miles of the Big Sioux River moves through federal review after Army Engineers endorse widening and straightening from the mouth to two miles north of Akron at an estimated 6.69 million dollars. A poll among Elk Point area landowners shows strong support with 108 responses and 80 in favor, 28 against, and a cost impact of about 274 thousand dollars to Siouxland residents. The plan now awaits review by the Army Chief Engineer and state agencies before congressional consideration.
A weekly church schedule lists services meetings and events for Immanuel and Union Creek Lutheran Churches led by Pastor David J. Roy. Highlights include unit meetings, a 7:30 p.m. Friday marriage ceremony, Sunday worship and Sunday school, choir rehearsals, a bowling party, and a Ladies A Lt. C. W. program under hostesses Mrs. Gilbert Pefferman and Mrs. Anna Stinehart.
The Morehead family reunion and picnic dinner took place on Sunday August 18 at the Frank Morehead farm.
