Powell Chinchilla Ranch Faces Early Hurdles and High Costs
In April 1966 Marvin and Mary Ellen Powell began a chinchilla business with support from Marvin’s parents near Akron, Union County. They started with 56 females and seven males, expanding to 224 females, 32 breeding males, and 90 male pelters. The project requires costly housing, climate control, and daily labor from four people, with an initial investment estimated at 25 to 30 thousand dollars. Pelts average about twenty five per month, and litter sizes range two to three, with some females delivering up to three litters annually under careful reproduction.
