Summer Science Club tours garden projects on July 23 with thirty members parents and friends visiting gardens of Don Pat and Gary Buryanek Mike Vrana Dick Hummel Richard and Pat Port Lee Frank and Liz Robak and Bill Jorat. Members have developed radish crosses and seed will be planted this summer as part of next spring wrap. At the home of Mr and Mrs Roger Banks the group pollinated grains in beds while grafting techniques were discussed and one graft observed.
Notice invites members to a Monday August 12 1968 8 00 p m gathering at Don Buryanck s home. Mrs Banks will serve lunch and Don will demonstrate his work with mate and gerbils focusing on learning processes observed in these animals.

The Chatsworth Indies beat McCook’s Indies 6 2 and plans for a Jefferson ladies ball game. a birthday reminder and bridal shower for Sharon Bultman mark August 8. Iowa State University extension agronomist Duncan reports western Iowa faces stress from heat and drought, hurting corn prospects there while eastern two thirds appears favorable with likely higher yields overall. Soybean prospects are uncertain with some fields damaged by atrazine carryover, but yields may surpass last year’s estimates.

A July 31 1948 marriage linked Miss Oleson to Kenneth Anderson of Akron. Rev J A Pankuk and family headed to Bible camp at Lake Okoboji and a visit to Titonka. Births listed include a daughter for Francis Bauerly on Aug 1 1948 and another daughter for Harry Thietje on July 29 1948. A Beresford three story brick school building was destroyed by fire caused by a lightning bolt. Mrs Alma Columbus of Chicago visited her sister Mrs Lester Heyl. Local baseball saw Town lose to Storm Lakers 6 1 and Remsen 2 1.
Akron town baseball lost to Remsen 5 to 0 with Ea Hartman pitching for Akron. Also notes a birth, a lightning strike on a garage and a school chimney, and several local events including a Blath Frénelr Memorial Battery picnic.
Forty years ago Mr and Mrs H A Stryzewski traveled to Renwick Iowa to visit Rev and Mrs Gillmann and relatives then to Minneapolis and St Paul for a Variety Store buying trip. Chas Allen and Frances left for a two week vacation to Maundeville West Virginia to visit his father and relatives. Akron golf beat Orange City Akton 33 to 14 on local links. Dr N J Brown and J C Kennedy tied for low 73. Erma Waterbury wed Clarence A Hummel August 4 1928 at Augustana Lutheran Sioux City. A baby Abon born to Mr and Mrs Henry Willer August 6 1928. Mr and Mrs Wm Reany of Ottumwa Iowa visited here with sister Mrs Welton Barr and relatives.
Fifty years ago Mrs. Lester Seeley and Mr. Henry Eichaker welcomed daughters on August 7 1918. Mrs. Sylvester Port learned by telegram that her son Pvt Carl Barr was killed in action in France on July 96 1918, the second Akron casualty after Albert Hoseliler.
In hot 97 degree weather with late week rain about 2 inches harvesting nears completion. James Agnes farm yields 23 bushels per sere, L F Sprenger 22 bushels, W W Burtill named as Town delegate to the National Retail Clothiers convention in New York. Dr I J Conger leaves for a three week dental post graduate course at Dunlap Research Institute in Chicago.
60 Years Ago report notes A N Manalove of Denver was struck by a train north of Chatsworth while on the tracks, possibly lying or sitting. Frank Fisher of South Bend began work at Hiltiker Son's Machine Shop. he is a veteran blacksmith and wagon maker and skilled horse shoer. Records of births appear for Aug 1908. Akron council votes to install a sanitary sewer system and seeks bids. News of visits, moves, and job changes across Nebraska and Washington add local color.
Iowa State University plant pathologist Abe Epstein reports that high winds and thundershowers cause and spread bacterial blight in soybeans. The disease overwinters in soil and is seedborne. prevention rests on disease-free seed and a proper crop rotation to allow soybean residue to rot down.
A twenty page booklet titled Today's Pacts About Arthritis is free to Iowa residents. It answers fifty common questions about arthritis and related rheumatic diseases. Dr. William B. Paul notes many Iowans lack facts that could prevent crippling from arthritis. Public Safety and Commissioner Jack Fulton announce a new Safe ty Program to recognize drivers and passengers whose lives were saved by seat belts. Three color stickers will be issued to car owners who send accounts of accidents where belts proved lifesaving, with reviews from reports and letters to the department in Des Moines Iowa 50319.
The 50th annual Cattle Feeders Day will be held in Ames on Thursday August 29. Activities start at 8 30 am with cattle and facilities inspections at the Beef Nutrition Farm three miles northwest of the Iowa State University campus. At 10 30 am the program moves to Memorial Union with nutrition and management trial results from ISU researchers. Two speakers will headline the afternoon program Kenneth Monfort of Monfort Feedlots and Monfort Packing Company and Stephen Garst of Garst Farm will discuss future beef cattle production and the heaf ecow’s role in Iowa’s growth. The event date repeats as August 20th for the 50th annual Cattle Feeders Day.
