154 graduates received degrees at the Summer Session commencement on August 8 in Vermillion. The largest group earned 98 master’s degrees, 56 bachelor’s degrees were granted, totaling 164 that day and bringing the year’s total near 600. Speaker Lloyd T. Uecker delivered the address. Rev. Carl Borgwardt gave the invocation and benediction. Hon. Harry J. Eggen conferred the degrees. Four graduates earned honors: Joanne Burges Andersen and Mary Garvey Keller cum laude in Arts and Sciences and Speech, Thomas Ray Knutson cum laude in General Business, Ruby Frances Grace cum laude in Elementary Education. Degrees also went to Winifred L. Fogler, Robert William Baryman, Neil McLane, and Karl Rogosch with a Master’s in Music.

Colonel Albert L. Lemen of 2106 Maryal Drive, Akron, is named one of two national guard officers in the United States chosen to attend the United States Army War College. He serves as executive officer of the operations and training division of the state military department and will report to Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania, August 6 for the ten and a half month course with his wife and two daughters. A July visit to Akron included a family picnic with about thirty relatives.

Medical staff from the State Services for Crippled Children conduct a one day clinic at Cherokee High School on Tuesday August 26 serving Sioux O'Brien Plymouth Cherokee Buena Vista Ida and Woodbury counties. Children under 21 are examined with no charge and findings are mailed to the referring physician.

Hoeven Announces Rural Mail Service Policy Change
Congressman Charles B Hoeven said the Post Office Department will soon publish a policy expanding rural direct delivery.
