State education board urges preservation of natural areas as outdoor education expands. Mentions The Nature Conservancy at 20386 K Street NW Washington DC 20086 with 7100 members and Iowa Chapter formed in 1963 conducting a survey of sites for preservation. The National Defense Education Act now supports about 16 000 elementary and secondary teachers to pursue advanced study in social sciences and humanities at 410 institutes nationwide funded by the Office of Education. Programs run five to seven weeks mainly in summer at 247 colleges and universities with Iowa sites at Iowa State University Ames and the University of Iowa Iowa City.

Dawn leads band drill team choir and drama while aiming for a music degree at the University of South Dakota. Thomas R. Amlie was honored last month with an open house reception at the Longhouse in Spencer for his 101st birthday. Local residents gathered to commend his long life and community involvement.
The Cheerful Neighbors Extension Club met April 6 at Mrs. Lloyd Miller s home with eight members. A county council report was given and two members won entries for the County Achievement event at Elk Point in May. Winners were Mrs. Alvin Frisk and Mrs. Howard Johnson. Next meeting is May 4 at Mrs. Raymond Heeren s home at 12 30 p m with a luncheon on meat cookery and roll call: a new way to fix meat.
The U S Civil Service Commission announces a nationwide clerical exam for federal agencies in the Washington area with salaries from 3680 to 4000 annually. High school graduates may qualify for an 8680 post at age 16. Applications due May 8 1965 with test in June and lists ready by August.
A letter from Norris G. Olney Jr. of Iowa School Organization urges Iowa legislators to resist giving the state superintendent and board of public instruction more power. It calls for elected positions, sensible minimum standards, district classifications by scholastic achievement, and bond votes at 60 percent. The ad seeks dues and donations to fund lobbying and urges readers to write legislators now.
Oscar Rockhill, 96, of Larchmont, enrolls in a University of Pennsylvania correspondence course and earns an A. He studies grafted fruit trees including peach apricot and four plum varieties. He plans to transplant the potted tree into an orchard in spring to observe fruit yields.
