Blum Couple Celebrates 25th Wedding Anniversary
Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Blum held open house at the Eagles Hall on March 28 in observance of their silver wedding anniversary. Married April 2, 1940, at Cathedral of Epiphany in Sioux City, they live on a farm south of Akron. Their daughters Penny Harvey and Iola Blum, a student at Iowa State, and one grandson, Bradley Harvey, attended. About 225 guests from Akron and neighboring towns joined as the H. S. Club aided in the kitchen and friends offered tributes.

Sioux City to erect second tallest TV tower
Ground breaking last week launched a 2000 foot tower 11 miles northeast of Sioux City near James Town to serve KTIV and KVTV. The project aims for a fall completion after six years of approvals, to deliver clearer signals in many communities, despite competing Fargo KXGO tower at 2089 feet.

Union County Electric Co op Holds Annual Meeting
Union County Electric Cooperative re elected Alex Chicoine to the board and honored two organizers at the Elk Point meeting. Earl Pike and J Martin Larson received East River Eminent Service Awards for helping organize the coop in 1987. Larson joined the board in 1941 and Pike has served as secretary since 1937. Capital credit checks totaling 5000 were distributed.

Franz Schneiders Host Japanese Farm Youth in Iowa
Franz and wife of LeMars Rt. 5 will host one of four Iowa farm families for a yearlong exchange with a Japanese trainee. The student arrives March 30 at Des Moines YWCA, then lives at the Schneiders’ farm for 11 months and tours Iowa and the nation. Sponsored by Iowa Farm Bureau with Japan’s Association for International Collaboration of Farmers to foster goodwill and share American agriculture.

Flood prevention relies on soil conservation on every farm in Plymouth county. Level terraces hold about 600,000 gallons per mile, with 1,300 miles built to date storing 660 million gallons. Terracing reduces runoff, boosts corn yields by 10 to 20 percent, and, with small watershed projects, could lessen floods in the area.
