Boy Scouts Collect Goodwill Bags Saturday

On Saturday April 16 Scout master Floyd Davis and the Boy Scouts will complete the Good Turn Day clothing drive for Goodwill Industries. Akron residents should place filled bags on their front steps by 8:30 a.m. for pick up. newspapers and magazines are not accepted. Also included is Gordon Hollar urging residents to return Census sample forms promptly, noting the 26 percent sample and strict confidentiality under federal law.

Veterans On-Farm Training In Iowa Public Schools

Veterans On-Farm Training is a key part of Iowa vocational education under the State Department of Public Instruction. Since 1950 the program has operated under federal Public Law 346 and 550, benefiting postwar veterans and later Koreans. Eligible veterans must control a suitable farm, commit full time, keep detailed records, and receive training allowances from the Veterans Administration while paying tuition to the high school for instruction and books.

Veterans Training Programs Reach Thousands Across States

The report details an allowance for local school operation and administration and state supervision costs. Under the programs over 21,000 World War II veterans and 9,000 Korean veterans have been trained. About 326 town schools offered the training across two laws with 11 schools offering 117 classes and 1,877 veterans enrolled. The peak Korean veteran enrollment occurred in January 1956 with 4,120 participants.

Akron junior Jack Borehers from Buena Vista College Storm Lake is named to the 20 man traveling squad led by Coach Jay Beekman for a southern conditioning trip to Arkansas. The Beavers open the 26 game season against the Arkansas Razorbacks in Fayetteville and start Iowa conference play April 14 in a double header at Indianola against Simpson. Borehers was the leading pitcher for BV last season.
