John Weyen 64 lifelong Preston township resident was found dead at his Hawarden area farm Saturday April 2. A rural carrier spotted his car in a ditch and notified authorities. Officials suspected a heart attack during a drive, with death occurring before reaching home. Survived by his mother Mrs Hannah Weyen and two brothers Herman Chatsworth and Henry Beresford S. D. Funeral held at St John’s Lutheran Preston township with burial in the church cemetery.

Farmers Cautioned In Feeding Flood-Wet Grain
In flood affected areas farmers were urged to avoid feeding hay grain or forage that was submerged or waterlogged. University of Nebraska experts warned mold fermentation and dirt can cause digestive disturbances and forage poisoning. Four handling options were offered for wet grain including drying commercially or air drying, spreading no more than six inches deep and timely turning.

Big Sioux River Reaches Highest Level on Record
The Big Sioux River rose to a record crest causing widespread flooding in Akron and backing sewage into basements of local businesses. Lower areas near Jefferson, North Sioux City and Riverside saw the worst damage, with over a thousand families evacuated. Helicopters surveyed the flood for the White House as eastern Nebraska was designated a disaster area. The river stood at 19.03 feet, about three feet below the crest.

Farm Economist Francis Kutish of Iowa State University says a rising market of fed and feeder cattle will lift prices as spring and summer feedings approach. He notes increased feeder-cattle prices since January and larger fall marketings due to bigger stocker inventories.
