Union County Electric Co op officials honored at Elk Point meeting

Two longtime Union County Electric Cooperative figures, J. Martin Larson and Earl Pike, received Faust River Eminent Service awards at the annual Elk Point gathering. Larson directed from 1941 to 1961, Pike has 28 years of service and helped found the co op in 1937. The utility serves 776 active customers in South Dakota.

Iowa Farm Outlook: Soybeans to Stay Strong into Summer

Iowa State University economist Gene Futrell predicts soybean and oil markets will stay firm through summer with export prospects and a large Soviet sale boosting prices, while meal remains weaker and 1964 patterns unlikely to repeat. Prices in early February ranged 2.85 to 2.90 per bushel, about 30 cents higher than a year ago, and dock strikes could limit exports.

New FM Radio Station KTFC To Open Near Sioux City

KTFC a Christian FM station with 103.8 MHz and 94000 watt output will operate from a 200 foot tower east of Sioux City. It will run six am to midnight with news weather market reports and sacred music and plans daily religious and book reading programs. Don and Mrs Swanson will run the station after moving from Duluth serving local churches and farmers.

The Future Homemakers of America held a March meeting led by president Jeanne Plueger. Counseling Institutes to Be Funded by HEW for 1965 66

The Office of Education will support 58 counseling and guidance institutes next summer and the 1965 66 academic year under the National Defense Education Act. In Iowa, programs run at State College of Iowa Cedar Falls and State University of Iowa Iowa City with about 30 participants each, totaling 1740 nationwide. Enrollees receive 75 dollars weekly plus 15 dollars per dependent. nine Iowa summer institutes have enrolled 273. University of Iowa has 170 and State College of Iowa 103 total enrollees across four institutes.

State aid rules urge 180 day school year in Iowa

Iowa public schools receive state aid based on days in session up to 180. Weather, bad roads, epidemics, and emergencies allow adjustments. Districts may make up time, even into June, but May 28 is the cutoff to qualify for time lost adjustment. districts must request the General Aid Request form from the county superintendent and justify each case.

Tuition costs for 450 of 459 districts with four year high schools show per pupil rates from 362.61 to 1259.91, averaging 633.02 statewide. Smaller districts under 100 pupils report the highest averages 771.88, while districts with 600 plus enrollments show the lowest averages 584.40. Elementary costs in four year districts range from 673.05 to 216.91, averaging 400.33.

1964 crops under support reported in Plymouth County

A county official says Plymouth County farmers had 670,711 bu corn and 55,288 bu soybeans under price support loans at end January 1964, with total loans nationwide for several grains down from 1963. Wheat loans rose modestly while corn and soybeans show smaller totals overall.
