The Akron Register-Tribune is a weekly newspaper published every Thursday in Akron Iowa Ply mouth County. It is entered at the post office as second class mail matter September 26 1901.
Westfield News reports a sock hop in the gym from 8 to 12 with cheerleaders hosting. Local residents and teachers note community events, student achievements, and recent care visits including Burke, Langley, and Welch families.
The March 15 meeting at Duane Wetrosky home drew 19 members. Blair Smith discussed meat inspection and beef courses while Daryl Smith expanded the talk. Mrs. Wetrosky served a delicious lunch after the meeting. Reporter Dennis Smith.
Special correspondence records frequent visits and gatherings. Names include Moehlman Collmann Hemmerrick and Repp along with Buchman Tentinger Hendricks Crow and others. Occasional hospital update mentions Miss Meta Moehlman in Oklahoma and a hip fracture.
Details released by Ernest Turek Legal Coordinators of the Siouxland Drug Education and Information Program announce an Iowa Law Enforcement Regional Narcotics Seminar in Sioux City April 6 7 8 and 9 1971. Attendance limited to peace officers open free to law enforcement. registrations accepted until March 31 with forms from Mr. Turek at 8th Floor Court House Sioux City. First come first served up to 100 participants.
Alcester Ministerial Association sponsors an annual Alcester churches basketball tournament to be held Friday and Saturday March 26 and 27. The event promotes interchurch competition among local congregations.
Bowling results from the Tuesday Coffee League week of March 23 1971 show Lucille Ball’s top team with 1466 series and 496 game. Individual leaders include Mert Trobaugh Marie Henke and Betty Halwey with multiple high scores and numerous split conversions listed for several bowlers. Other leagues and standings from Almond Joys Red Hots Bit-O-Honeys Tootsie Rolls Big Boogies Three Musketeers and the Akron Women’s Commercial Bowling League are detailed with weekly scores split conversions and high games and series.

Lily Day in downtown LeMars will be held April 3 1971 announced Mrs. Lowell Marbach Lily Day Chairman. Campaign runs through April 11 Easter Sunday to raise funds for crippled children with 90 percent staying in state for rehabilitation services. Stanton Starlette 4-H Club members will distribute paper Easter Hires on lapels at street corners and intersections while volunteers carry lilies and wear badges.

Local businessman Verle Barwick moves to install a two way radio communications network for Barwick Implement Co to streamline operations. The notices also list obituaries and social events including marriages and civic updates from Akron and Sioux City areas with past local weather and community milestones.
The Johnson Jr. Homemakers met Monday at Joan and Mary Warenhorst’s home. Pres. Donna Allen opened at 7 15. Members 13 voiced favorites, reports by Nancy Ruden and Kaye Willer, and nominations for county council and state conference. Demonstrations covered pie crust and foods. Next meeting set for April 19 at Kaye Willer’s home.
The first annual Union County Pork Producers Banquet is planned for Saturday April 3 at 6 30 p m in the Alcester City Auditorium. Craighton Kwall National Pork Council program director will speak. Don Weiberg WNAX Farm Director will host. Clark Anderton Alcester is county president and banquet chairman. About 200 producers have joined the new association for 1971. Public invited. Tickets from Pork Producer members or the County Extension Office.

Library adds many new books for children and teens plus new paperbacks and hardbacks.
Union County Farm Bureau invites high school juniors with top two thirds class rank and strong character to apply for six openings at the Youth Citizenship Seminar to be hosted August 1 to 5 at Black Hills State College Spearfish SD.
Union County executive board met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Staum of Elk Point on March 22. Routine business and reports were given with bills presented and paid. Mrs. Robert Ofstehage announced a Citizenship Seminar at Spearfish August 1 to 5 with six students chosen to attend. Bruce Klemme reported on the Young Farmers and Ranchers meeting in Pierre mid February. Discussion covered a bill taxing pickups and trucks used in interstate commerce, seen as a hardship for farmers near state lines. Petitions for withdrawal circulate and will be sent to Secretary Volpe on April 1. Lunch followed.
Reader notes request help tracing the origin of April Fool's Day while sharing a dessert recipe. The recipe, courtesy of Mrs. Verle Barwick, is Apple Cake Dessert with cream, vanilla ice cream, and nut ingredients. Mix sugar eggs and vanilla, fold in flour cinnamon soda salt, add peeled apples and nuts, bake at 350 then lower heat and finish.
