Overheated stove blamed for South Main fire in early hours

Fire at Emil Deck's grocery 1123 S Main St gutted both this frame building and adjacent saloon owned by John Ortscheid. Losses include Emil Decks about 1000 with 700 insured and Charles Widdersheim around 1200 with small insurance. Pfeil family attic fire damage, W S Rodenbaugh shoe store water loss minor. Fire likely started from stove. adjoining property saved with effort. Another fire at Thomas H Dixon residence and cigar factory on Champlain and Irvin sts caused slight building damage and scorched contents from lamp explosion.

Elephant killed attendant in Jacksonville show at Elks Fair

A Rochester report says William Cleggett former Rochester Press Club steward was killed by an elephant from the Streets of India exhibit at the Elks Fair in Jacksonville Florida. It claims Cleggett fed tobacco to the animal, angering it. two days later the elephant escaped its chain, lifted him, and crushed him to the ground. Cleggett, a 35 year old local figure, accompanied the show when it left Rochester. Weather forecast notes rain tonight and colder Tuesday with rain possibly turning to snow.
