Snakes Under Scrutiny by Savannah Ecology Lab Researchers

University of Georgia graduate student Kimberly Andrews and Peri Mason study road kill snakes at the Savannah River Site to assess how vehicular traffic affects mortality and local ecosystems. They set 27 specimens across three road types and revisit every four hours to log condition and position.

Naval Fuels facility at Savannah River Site to be demolished

A former Navy nuclear materials producer at the Savannah River Site in F Area is being demolished under Project 247 as part of SAS cleanup. The 97,600 square foot facility, used 1985 to 1989, entered safe shutdown 1997 to 2002 and is to be completed by November 2006 with glovebox removal already completed.

Two charged in larcenies in Aiken County

Aiken sheriff’s investigators arrested Steven W. Conder 36 for three counts of grand larceny and multiple burglary charges after thefts from model homes at local mobile home dealerships. Lewis M. Wigfall 25 is charged with receiving stolen goods traded for crack cocaine. Items including washers dryers TVs furniture and vehicles were recovered at Wigfall’s residence from Aug 30 to Sept 25.

Delegation urged to shield budget for arts school

Virginia Aldrick, president emerita of the Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities, asked the local delegation to protect funding. She noted annual cost of educating a student at 18 000 to 20 000 dollars and cited 15 16 percent past cuts.
