Judge blocks Staples ouster from Aiken Electric Co op board

A circuit judge granted a temporary injunction preventing the Aiken Electric Cooperative’s board from ousting Gloria Staples. Judge Daniel Pieper filed the order in the Aiken County Court of Common Pleas supporting attorney Stanley Jackson. Staples, elected in May 1995, was deemed ineligible under bylaws that treat spouses as one entity and bar former utility workers within 10 years. Jackson challenges retroactive bylaw changes and the voting rules, citing potential constitutional issues. Other defendants include trustees Dorn Jr, Livingston, Furtick, Stewart Jr, Williams, Steed Jr, Prosser, and Swartz.

They propose an assignment to avoid standing loss, with City acceptance required. The City Council refused. S.C. Supreme Court upheld the lower court, and Cantelou was awarded $853.41 in a separate order.
