An Indonesian Garuda Airbus jetliner carrying 234 people crashed Friday in Sumatra amid dense smoke from widespread forest fires. Rescue teams located 212 bodies by night, with no survivors found. unclear if the smoke and low visibility contributed to the crash and flight data recorders await retrieval. Two Americans were among the passengers. the flight was from Jakarta to Medan.
An Antara report says a Medan bound plane descended through smoke haze and crashed after radar contact was lost eight minutes into final approach. Witnesses described a low flight path hitting a tree and breaking apart. several nationalities were aboard including Americans, Japanese, Germans, Dutch, Malaysians, and Indonesians. The haze, described as the worst in two months, forced many residents indoors.
The former New Ellenton attorney Francis T. Draine was ordered to pay 1000 to George E Cantelou under a state statute penalizing frivolous pleadings. Judge Henry F Floyd sanctioned Draine after a suit by New Ellenton citizens against Cantelou Harte McLeod and the McNair Law Firm over the 1990s sewer bond issues. Cantelou was dismissed but remained in the case, prompting continued court work and appeals deemed frivolous.
A 19 year old Aiken woman Slelanie Dawn Birchmore died at the Medical College of Georgia from injuries from a Sept 15 two car crash on S C 126 Belvedere at Dead Man's Curve. She had been in intensive care with severe head injuries since the accident. Funeral services will be held at 11 am today at Friendship Baptist Church Belvedere.
