Little Rock Nine mark anniversary of school integration
The Little Rock Nine arrived at Central High on a soggy campus as the city marked 50 years since Eisenhower sent troops to escort them inside. About 4,500 gathered on the lawn while former President Clinton opened the doors in a symbolic gesture and Gov. Mike Beebe and Mayor Mark Stodola noted ongoing inequities. The ceremony featured remarks from nine students including Melba Patillo Beals and Elizabeth Eckford, with reflections on progress and remaining division in education and society.
