Polygamist leader in Utah convicted of sex charges
Warren Jeffs, 51, leader of the FLDS splinter group, was found guilty as an accomplice to rape for facilitating a marriage between a 19 year old man and a 14 year old girl. The trial spotlighted polygamy in Utah and his iron fist rule. The jury deliberated 16 hours over three days. The case involved testimony from the young woman now 21 and her former husband Alien Steed, 26, regarding the Nevada motel wedding in 2001 and the couple’s first sexual encounter, with prosecutors noting coercion and lack of body-reproductive knowledge. Jeffs faces possible life imprisonment.
