Rita Strikes Gulf Coast Causes Widespread Damage

Rita roared ashore near the Texas Louisiana line as a Category 3 hurricane with 120 mph winds and up to 25 inches of rain. The storm damaged two cooling towers and a flare stack at a refinery and triggered mass evacuations across a 500 mile coast, with extensive flooding, power outages, and fires in Beaumont, Port Arthur, and New Orleans areas.
