Citizens unload about taxes and pay raises for Washington officials, blue laws, prices, alcohol ads, ATV safety, missing persons, and local editorials. They urge action on safety for Beech Island missing woman, call for Easter holiday breaks, and critique state blue laws and sales practices.
Public Education Partners, an Aiken County nonprofit, plans a six month grant project to aid rural middle school youth. Executive Director Diane Mangiante notes collaborations will create model programs for healthy development and connect teens with caring adults.
A Crosland Park apartment fire damaged the building at 630 Aldrich St with $30 000 in damage. Two men helped check nearby units for children but no one was home. Firefighters contained most of the blaze to a bedroom and the cause is under investigation.
In two unrelated cases Circuit Judge James Barber sentenced Pamela A. Powell and Laverna C. Price Hall for failing to pay state income taxes. Powell, a Savannah River Site supervisor earning about 80,000 annually, received one year with five years probation and 1500 fine plus 5010 restitution. Hall pleaded guilty to willful preparation of a false tax return and got three years suspended on 500 fine, two years probation and 500 hours of service. The cases involved false reporting and inflated refunds totaling about 6,000 distributed to Hall’s bank account and her husband’s.
