South Carolina PACT criteria under Scrutiny
Twenty five Aiken County elementary and middle schools were placed on the U S Department of Education needs improvement list this week. Associate Superintendent Dr Frank Roberson says if the schools were in Georgia only two would remain on the list. He explains Georgia defines proficient differently and compares state standards with federal No Child Left Behind goals. Glassfiber workers urge Union push at Aiken plant
Debbie Kenny of Teamsters Local 86 told a Augusta press conference that Advanced Glassfiber Yarn employees have sacrificed raises and social activities to keep the Aiken plant afloat and want management to match the support. Negotiations with the company were set to begin Thursday but were postponed Wednesday afternoon.

Ambulance Crash Triggers Evacuation At Aiken Clinic
An unattended ambulance in the Gambro Aiken Dialysis Clinic lot rolled forward hitting a power pole, snapping it and cutting power to the facility. The crash trapped two elevator occupants. they were rescued safely. The ambulance and a patient’s 1986 truck burned in the incident, both totaled. Power was restored within hours after SCE&G crews acted.

States identify few dangerous schools nationwide
Only 52 of 91 000 public schools are labeled persistently dangerous, allowing transfers for students. Nearly 700 000 violent crimes occurred in schools in 2000, while 44 states plus DCreported no unsafe schools.
