Gamecocks and Tigers To Play As Scheduled

The University of South Carolina and Clemson University will play today and tonight now that Hurricane Hugo has left the state. Earlier speculation of postponement ended Friday afternoon with school announcements. Fans are urged to arrive early as traffic control will be lighter due to Hugo’s damage in Charleston.

Justice Minister Quits in Colombia After Death Threats

Justice Minister Monica de Greiff resigned after threats from drug traffickers. she said President Virgilio Barco thought he needed another type of person. She noted she would have preferred to stay, citing unity during the war between the government and traffickers.

Hugo brushed past Aiken County sparing homes and most businesses. North Augusta officials reported a calm scene with a few downed trees and power outages. Stores saw high sales of water bread and milk while hotels briefly filled then reopened as Charleston remained closed to oceanfront visitors.

Destruction Trails Hugo Across S C

Hugo pummeled Charleston and Myrtle Beach areas killing at least 11 in the Carolinas before weakening inland. Officials reported eight deaths near Charleston and one in Columbia, with Garden City largely destroyed and boats blown ashore. President Bush declared seven counties federal disaster areas as Hugo moved toward Canada.

Songwriter Berlin Dies At Age 101

New York based songwriter Irving Berlin died in his sleep at 5 30 p m Friday age 101 He was honored for his American music after a career in vaudeville and stage and screen standards including God Bless America and White Christmas Berlin declined public celebrations on his centennial and will have private funeral services per his funeral home contact The Associated press story notes Berlin received a Statue of Liberty centennial medal with fellow immigrants and was praised by Jerome Kern and Frank Sinatra was among those who paid tribute in later years
