Mickey Tettleton returns to power for Baltimore hitting his third homer in seven games as the Orioles beat Detroit 9-2. Manager Frank Robinson says bats improve with more at bats and Tettleton notes uneven confidence but aims for consistent contact as Baltimore closes in on first place in the AL East.
The San Francisco Giants rallied for a 4-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers, halting a three game Dodgers sweep and trimming the magic number to five. Brett Butler delivered the key two run double in the seventh after Will Clark left with a bone bruise. Steve Bedrosian earned his 23rd save.
Rookie Tommy Greene held Houston to three hits as Lonnie Smith drove in all three Braves runs with a homer and a single. Smith's homer came off Jim Deshaies in the fourth, and Greene struck out seven in his third major league start.
Mike Fitzgerald hit a grand slam and Hubie Brooks added a two run homer to lead Montreal past Pittsburgh 6 5. The Expos improve to 3 11 in 14 games and stay seven behind the Cubs as Tim Burke preserves a 27th save by escaping a ninth inning jam. In Cleveland, the California Angels lost 5-4 in 17 innings after tying the game with three runs in the ninth. Pete O'Brien opened the 17th with a triple, Brook Jacoby followed with a sacrifice fly, and Cleveland snapped a six-game skid. Oakland widened its lead in the West with a 2-1 win over Minnesota as Seattle beat Texas 8-3.
Don Mattingly homered in both games but his 22nd of the season delivered the nightcap winner in the 10th. Rob Deer homered for Milwaukee in the top of the inning as the Brewers split the twin bill. In the first game Joey Meyer went deep, a six-run brawl erupted, and Mark Knudson earned his fifth win in six starts.
Oakland edged Twins to close in on AL West title as Mark McGwire finally solved hitting in the Metrodome. He had struggled in the only AL park where he had not homered, boosting the A's playoff push.
Randy Johnson, the 6 foot 10 left hander acquired from Montreal for Mark Langston, pitched seven innings of quality ball allowing only three runs. He struck out 10 and walked two as Seattle beat Texas 8 to 3. Johnson improved to 2-1 against the Rangers this season with a 1.57 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 23 innings in those meetings.
