Adopt A Highway volunteers clean up Aiken streets

Volunteers from many local groups joined the Adopt A Highway program for a September cleanup. The county started in 1988 with 78 groups each signing two year contracts to maintain two miles of road four times a year. The effort, run through the South Carolina Department of Transportation, has collected over 11 000 pounds of trash this year. Rotarians and other clubs view it as community service, exercise and city improvement.

Volunteers sew blankets for Aiken SPCA pets at Hobby Lobby

Seventeen volunteers from Hobby Lobby and the Aiken SPCA community gathered to quilt dog and cat blankets using donated fabric. Organizer Melinda Gochicoa, who lost two dogs Ranger and Sweetie, led the effort to provide warmth and comfort for sheltered animals.
