Miami AP reports Burger King promotional materials credit Thomas Jefferson with writing the Constitution and list Lyndon Johnson’s birth year as 1903. The campaign includes bookmarks posters and materials mailed to classrooms nationwide.

Westinghouse Savannah River Co. plans to hire some retired Du Pont employees to operate the Savannah River Plant safely and effectively. Retirees rehired will keep their former salary and earned vacation, but may take unpaid time off beyond prior vacation limits. All current Du Pont workers on site will be offered continued employment.
The Aiken County Council voted 8 to 0 to abolish the Public Service Authority after a long contentious history. PSA Chairman Donald E. Hartwig reacted with surprise and concern, while members cited changes in technology and staffing as justification. The measure followed years of reorganizations and ethics scrutiny dating back to 1974.
The government reports August prices up 0.4 percent led by higher food shelter and gasoline costs. Food and beverages rose 0.5 percent while shelter climbed 0.6 percent and energy surged 0.9 percent. Gasoline remained below its 1987 level and 26 percent under March 1981 peak. The GNP deflator also jumped 5.5 percent in Q2.
Barry Morris Dial nine died after a group of children played a dangerous game of chicken in Graniteville. The boy stepped in front of an oncoming car while waiting for the school bus, in a prepubescent stunt that turned fatal.
