Poll finds many doubt candidates can deliver on promises

The Media General AP poll of 1,125 adults shows neither George Bush nor Michael Dukakis likely to fulfill most campaign promises. Bush edged Dukakis on manageability and defense, while Dukakis fared better on caring for people and certain personal traits. Both were seen as strong leaders by about half, with mixed views on taxes, education, and the middle class. The survey follows Labor Day and shapes perceptions ahead of the election.

South Carolina SAT gains still leave state last in nation

GNP Expands By 3.0 Percent For Quarter

The Commerce Department reports gross national product rose 3.0 percent in the April-June quarter, reaching a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $3.99 trillion. Shown gains were pulled down by drought losses and a downward revision from 3.3 percent earlier, with crop losses totaling $13.9 billion and denting expected performance into the next quarters.

Local SAT Scores Rise In Aiken County Schools

Aiken County SAT results show scores above the state average and upward trends over a decade. Verbal and math scores climbed from 373 and 427 in 10 years ago to 411 and 458 for 1987 88, with more seniors taking the test—50.5 percent last year, 615 students out of 118 test takers.

Child Struck and Killed While Waiting for Bus in Graniteville

A nine year old boy, Barry Morris Dial of Breezy Hall Trailer Park, was struck and killed on Highway 144 at about 7 43 a m while waiting for a school bus. The driver was John Edwards of Johnston. The incident occurred near the mailbox area and reportedly there were no bus signs posted at the location.
