Congress Won't Buy Plutonium, Derrick Says
U S Representative Butler Derrick of South Carolina says Congress will likely resist a $250 million move by the Energy Department to buy plutonium from the Barnwell Nuclear Fuels Plant. Derrick questions legality of federal guarantees for private investment and notes the plant has never operated due to a 1977 moratorium. The plant requires $750 million in construction before completion.
