Visions 2004 chairman says he remains in office

Murder trial set for October in Gatti killing case

Donnie Shannon Council, Graniteville, faces capital murder charges for the October 1992 torture and killing of 72 year old Elizabeth H. Gatti. Judge Henry Floyd scheduled October 14 for the start of the death penalty trial with about 200 jurors to qualify into a 90 member panel as power outages interrupted proceedings.

New Ellenton Nears Bond Dispute Settlement

Circuit Judge Henry F. Floyd announced marathon talks brought New Ellenton sewer bond dispute to the brink of settlement. If the council votes Monday at 7 pm to approve terms, the long running case could end. failure would push the matter to trial on November 18.

Attendance grows as Aiken County schools exceed projections

Aiken County public schools report 25,446 students district wide for 1996-97, with Area One adding 180 students to reach 9,787 across 12 schools. Officials note staff adjustments to match enrollment and emphasize efforts to serve more students, including 500 extra full day kindergarten pupils. Area Two shows 5,184 pupils, Area Three records 4,759, down from 4,818.

Hortense Pummels Caribbean Islands Leaving Floods and Deaths

Hurricane Hortense struck Puerto Rico killing eight and leaving thousands homeless as it battered the island with 90 mph winds. It then hit Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic and headed toward the Turks and Caicos. Two fishermen were missing after ignoring warnings. over 1,000 displaced in the Dominican Republic. The storm lingered off the north Atlantic coast with warnings issued for nearby territories.
