Aiken P Z to Review Medical Complex Plan Tomorrow

The Aiken Planning and Zoning Commission will review a five acre medical complex next to Aiken Community Hospital. Marshall Erdman and Associates will develop a 43,000 square foot two story brick and glass building with offices laboratories and a 186 car lot. The meeting at 3 p m will also cover subdivision landscape annexation zoning changes and other development items.

City Council Weighs Streets and Annexations in Aiken

The Aiken City Council will meet at 7:30 p.m. to consider annexation requests and street projects. Items include an engineering agreement for a water system in the southwest, Missisippi Avenue resurfacing plans, a drainage work request to the governor’s office, county participation in Hitchcock Retention Pond maintenance, and a first reading to annex perimeter roads.

Girl on bike hit by car at city intersection

A seven year old girl riding a bicycle was struck by a car at the Barnwell Avenue and Pendleton Street intersection. The car was driven by Annie Bell Adams. Officer Gerald Taylor investigated the accident and said two charges have been filed against the driver.

Aiken's Makin' festival draws record crowds and moved crafts outdoor

Aiken's Makin' drew an estimated threefold crowd growth to about 30,000 with perfect September weather. Crafts tables moved to the Park Avenue parkway boosting attendance and industrial exhibits in Municipal Auditorium reported heavy traffic. Vendors cited strong interest, diners exhausted food in the Taste of Aiken, while locals and visitors from abroad attended concerts and booths.

Board To Hear Policy Protest At Aiken Education Meeting

Aiken County Board of Education plans a 7:30 p.m. meeting at the Educational Center on Edgefield Avenue to discuss proposed changes to attendance policy. The agenda includes a request by Gayle Snelling to allow after hours medical appointments to count as excused absences, contracts for new elementary schools, and a report on suspensions and expulsions for 1983 84.

Tritium Release Now Called Very Small

The Savannah River Plant reports the maximum measured tritium oxide dose from last week at 0.2 millirem, based on milk and urine samples from workers in areas along the plume. Health officials say this dose would not cause observable health effects and is far below natural background radiation.
