Plant Guard Slain as Plant Reopens in Macon
In Macon Georgia a guard at Armstrong Cork Co. was shot and killed near the south gate while violence continued after the plant was reopened following a three month shutdown over labor trouble. A companion reported seeing movement in bushes before the single shot. Police said two fire bombs were later tossed at a nonstriking worker’s home but were extinguished. The plant had resumed operations after the Cement Lime and Gypsum Workers contract expired in June.

Judge Julius B. Ness of the 2nd Judicial Circuit ruled that the Aiken City Council has no legal obligation to grant a public hearing for fired Police Chief James B. Brown. He said Brown has no right to a hearing before the council and that the city manager, not council, holds removal authority under the city manager form of government.
