AFL CIO President George Meany warns workers will mark Labor Day with anger over inflation and recession and seek bigger wage gains in talks this year. He accuses Nixon administration policies of favoring banks with high interest rates while hurting jobs and incomes.
Al Wilson 27 of the Canned Heat band was found dead Thursday in a sleeping bag in the backyard of a Topanga Canyon home. A plastic bag of sleeping pills was nearby. an autopsy was ordered. Liberty Records says he had been camping on the property with a camper truck in the area.
Author John Dunbar filed for divorce from Marianne Faithfull in London court. He named Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones as co respondent. Faithfull, 23, also petitioned for divorce. the couple wed in 1965 and separated 18 months later.
At a gala state dinner honoring President Nixon in Coronado California Mexico's President Gustavo Diaz Ordaz warned that U S restrictions on international trade may imperil South America's economy. The event highlighted Mexican American friendship and included VIP guests.
An unmanned oil drilling platform in the Santa Barbara Channel burned for four hours after an explosion. Flames reached 200 feet high and were visible up and down the coast. Standard Oil of California said the robot rig was destroyed and the cause was not immediately known. Company workers extinguished the fire with seawater from six barges. no oil spill or injuries were reported.
Four thousand men in hard hats waved flags and marched down Flagler Street to honor the national banner. Parade marshal William H. Langer declared strong words against those who deface the flag. Phnom Penh and Saigon reports claim up to ten Communist divisions are in Cambodia or moving through Laos toward a large South Vietnam offensive. American sources note about 2000 bombing sorties in the region but caution such strikes have been routine for months. One Hanoi-linked source lists the 1st 2nd 5th 7th 9th 20th and 25th divisions among those gathering.
