County coroner Sue Townsend notes Aiken County ranks third in statewide traffic fatalities through 1996 with 40 deaths, four months remaining. She cites high speed limits belt use, and alcohol as major factors in most crashes.
County coroner Sue Townsend notes 1998 traffic deaths in Aiken County rival the entire 1997 tally. Statewide figures show Greenville 2, Spartanburg 42, Aiken 40, Florence 32, Anderson 28, Charleston tied at 27, Lexington 10, Berkeley 50, with projections calling for a historic worst year for the state.
Mrs Townsend says 79 injuries including five deaths last year in Aiken County are blamed on drivers. She notes results from the State Law Enforcement Division Lab may raise the numbers. Townsend urges constant public awareness for caution while driving and spoke with other coroners at the South Carolina Department of Public Safety in Columbia.
