NORTH AUGUSTA Interstate 20 travelers found a respite at the South Carolina Welcome Center with free snacks drinks and a sobering warning not to drink and drive. The twelfth Labor Day Pit Stop, sponsored by A B Beverage Co. Inc. of Aiken, drew praise from organizers who expect large crowds as they promote responsible travel and highway safety ahead of Labor Day weekend.

Mace Receives 12-Year Sentence For Break-In
John Travis Mace, 27, who led a weeklong chase after escaping a local jail in July, was sentenced to 12 years for second degree burglary. He pled guilty with his father and Deputy Defender Kent Landry at his side, citing a cocaine habit. Judge Frank Eppes warned he must reform or face more time. Mace also faces charges including burglary and larceny from a Huntsman Shell break-in.

Couple Discovers Body After Power Line Break
A couple along Old Ludlow Lake Road found a man’s body early Friday. The unidentified victim, a 25 to 30 year old white male, was shot in the head. He had reddish brown hair, gray blue eyes, a mustache, and a tattoo with the initials ZC. Fingerprints will help identify him and officials urged public tips. The coroner estimated death around 7:8 p.m. Thursday.
Consortium bids to build MOX fuel facility for DOE
A consortium led by Duke Engineering COGEMA Inc and Stone and Webster submits a bid to design construct and operate the MOX fuel fabrication plant for the Department of Energy The bid supports converting 50 tons of weapons grade plutonium and cites Savannah River Site as the preferred location DOE plans a final decision in early 1999 British Nuclear Fuels Limited and Siemens also bid DOE to award the contract on November 30 or soon after
