New staff at Aiken State Natural Area welcome two additions

Robert Mahoney and David Finney join the Windsor park as manager and ranger respectively. Both recently relocated from Oconee County and Florida to work together since August 2. The 1067 acre site offers canoeing and kayaking on the Edisto River, picnicking, fishing, camping, and hiking with a Civilian Conservation Corps heritage noted in interpretive signs. An Aiken Natural Day is planned for Saturday at 10 a.m. with wildlife talks and a parent child Q and A session. Park entry is $2 and the site is 1145 State Park Road Windsor.

Garden groups form at St. John's for flowers and fellowship

The Rev. Jim Bennett of St. John's United Methodist Church in Aiken organizes at least two new garden groups open to all residents. Groups will follow bylaws promoting Christian fellowship while teaching gardening, with byproducts like flowers for the spirit and vegetables for the body. Each meeting will include a prayer and a community service component, such as education programs or producing food for the homeless. An organizational meeting is set for 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 15 at the church. For info call 648-6891.

Rain May Damp Labor Day Picnics Says Meteorologist

Meteorologists forecast clear warm days early in the weekend then heavy rain late Sunday and into Labor Day. Tim Hawks of the National Weather Service warns a washout on Labor Day with possible inches of rainfall to replenish a deficit. Highs reach the low 90s before cooling to the 80s and overnight lows around 68.

Riverview Park Drive to Undergo Weeks of Renovation

North Augusta parks department says Riverview Park Drive southside will be rebuilt starting this month. Traffic will detour via Fairfield Avenue in Hammond Hills and the Fairfield side will close for improvements after Buena Vista side reopens. The park offers soccer baseball softball fields a disc golf course tennis courts and Greeneway. Call 441-4300 for details.
