Death of Richard Ricci hinders Elizabeth Smart case

Salt Lake City detectives chasing Elizabeth Smart’s kidnapper faced a setback as Richard Ricci, the Smart family’s former handyman and a prior suspect, died after a brain hemorrhage in jail. Police fear his death eliminates crucial leads while Ed Smart hopes others who knew Ricci may come forward. Ricci, 48, had a criminal history including burglary and assault, and he had been questioned but not charged in the kidnapping. The family had offered rewards for information on the abduction and a July break-in, with the investigation continuing despite Ricci’s death.
