Israel expands defenses along the 40 mile Golan Heights border with Syria. State radio reports hundreds of workers and dozens of bulldozers speed construction before winter to withstand artillery fire, as Syrian units fortify across the UN buffer zone.
Racial fights broke out at Hart-Dean School in South Boston during an assembly as schools enter a court ordered busing period. Several white pupils walked out, police said. No arrests or injuries reported.
Jury selection starts in Cleveland for eight former Ohio National Guardsmen charged with civil rights violations over the Kent State shootings on May 4, 1970. The defendants were indicted March 29 and face charges related to four student deaths and nine wounded during the campus protest.
State, local and federal authorities prepared for possible outages after an extortionist threatened to dynamite transmission towers in Portland. Bonneville Power Administration, area police and the FBI met after the agency refused a $1 million ransom demand.
Washington reports a tentative agreement ends National Airlines 98 day strike that halted operations. The deal awaits ratification by 1,600 International Association of Machinists members who walked out July 15 under FMCS director W J Usery Jr. supervision.
A Gallup Poll of 1,527 adults across 300 locations finds 81 percent naming inflation as the nation’s No 1 issue. Seventy three percent say Democrats would handle national problems better, while 37 percent favor Republicans. The survey asks about the day’s top problem.
President Ford says he remains convinced Nelson Rockefeller would make a good vice president. He said no serious conservative pressure urged withdrawal and spoke to five reporters aboard Air Force One late Saturday.
Washington AP reports the special prosecutor’s office winding up its work after the Watergate cover-up trial. Leon Jaworski submits his resignation effective Friday as the office prepares a final report and contemplates additional charges, especially in campaign contribution violations.
Sidney Taprell of Aiken and Phil Huff of Warrenville tie for first in the Aiken Standard Football Contest after both correctly predicted all games but lose on the tie-breaker by one point. UNC and NC State combined for 47 points. Taprell and Huff predicted 48 and 46 respectively. Others listed as missing entrants include James Campbell Doris Fulmer T J Buchmiller Carolyn Wheeler Leroy Edison and R L Pollard.

An 18 year old black male entered Crowley’s Liquor Store on York Street around 6 50 pm and fired a pistol at manager J W Crowley but the gun misfired. Crowley knocked the weapon away and the suspect fled north along York Street before being captured. The suspect’s name and charges are not released pending investigation.
The Supreme Court denied Ravenel’s appeal on residency for governor, upholding a federal court ruling that he did not meet the five year state residency requirement. Dorn and others commented as Ravenel’s bid faded, with a Charleston attorney and local officials cited in ongoing challenges.
County Board of Commissioners candidates meet the public at 8 p m in Room 107 USCA campus to answer questions from the League of Women Voters and from the audience. They will discuss the role of the commissioner and a hospital referendum question raised by a candidate.
In the October term of Aiken County General Sessions Court Judges Julius B. Ness and Frank Eppes showed contrasting styles. Eppes issued many suspended sentences and prison terms totalling 43 years, while Ness sent 13 defendants to jail for about 85 years and focused on traffic cases.
Republican Cecil Collins and Democrat George Snelling Jr. answered a League of Women Voters questionnaire on education and financing. Collins, 48, a Georgia graduate and longtime florist, served as North Augusta mayor and state representative and urged state financing to equalize school funding despite political influences. He prioritized ethics legislation and taxation reform.
