Virginia Knauer special assistant to President Ford for Consumer Affairs will address the public in Aiken tonight at 7 p.m. She will discuss individual consumer issues and provide national consumer analysis. The Town and Country Club sponsors her appearance.
Castro rejects the idea that Cuba's revolution shifted from American to Soviet domination. In a CBS interview he says the Soviets do not own any mine factory sugar mill land bank or utility in Cuba, asserting independence from Moscow.
Deputy Watergate prosecutor Henry Ruth has been selected to replace Leon Jaworski as special Watergate prosecutor. Atty. Gen. Saxbe and White House officials chose Ruth and plan to announce the appointment later in the week after conferring with President Ford.
In Kanawha County a dynamite blast damaged Midway Elementary on Campbells Creek near Charleston. Police said damage was light and classes would run as usual. The school had been targeted earlier this month in two bombings.
Four Boston high school students, two white and two black, arrive in Charlotte invited by West Charlotte High School as they meet local students to learn how desegregation works in the city. Barbara Steer says the group seeks ideas and notes they are not used to the situation.
In Cleveland Ohio jurors for eight former Ohio National Guardsmen charged in the 1970 Kent State shootings continue as defense seeks dismissal of four defendants. Judge Frank J Battisti adjourned the day while delaying a ruling until all jurors are seated.
Incumbents Jo Ann Price Edwin E Farmer Lawrence J Murphy and Carrol H Warner Republicans back a Hospital Corporation of America contract as voters decide funding via a November referendum Democrat Forrest L Kirby opposes the new hospital site and argues for a nearby location while L V Davis and Charles W Prosser press questions about binding referendum effects in the Aiken County Board of Commissioners race.
The Board of Commissioners discusses the contract with Hospital Corporation of America amid opposition to a private hospital. Kir by cites courthouse evidence while others call the claim hog wash. The referendum on county owned versus HCA hospital is framed around issuing up to 7.8 million dollars in bonds to acquire and construct facilities in Aiken County.
At tonight’s board meeting Commissioner Ralph Cullinan proposes preserving the vacated Aiken County Hospital by studying possible uses. President Ford urged unity at a Mexican summit and fundraisers in Oklahoma to back Republican candidates while inflation remains fueling higher consumer prices. The Labor Department reports September gains across food and services with overall CPI at 151.9 and prices up 9.7 percent for the year.
Motorists face continued closure of Newberry Street and the Chesterfield Street Park Avenue intersection. Ed Dudley, Aiken public works director, says crews aim to open this storm drainage section by tomorrow as work continues along the west lane of Chesterfield.
Marion D. McGowan and James H. Goodman address equalized funding in District 84. McGowan pushes uniform property tax assessments and statewide redistribution for education. Goodman seeks federal aid to balance facilities and per pupil funding and state level per pupil aid. Ethics legislation is McGowan’s top priority.
Ricky Tullis, 21, suffered an eye harming burn from ice thrown by an unidentified youth during an Augured robbery at Majik Market on Richland Avenue. Doctors warn eyesight may be uncertain for about three weeks while he remains in Talmadge Hospital. This follows another market violence incident in Aiken where Jane Alvarez was killed at York Street and Rutland Drive.
