The Ford administration halts a proposed White House swimming pool funded by private donations as President Ford urges belt tightening and refrains from asking the public for further expenditures. Press Secretary Ron Nessen said now is not the time to seek contributions for the project.
Belfast city center woke to gunfire during the morning rush after a night of rioting and arson. Two Roman Catholic men were wounded by a passing car’s shots and hospitalized as authorities reported over twenty major fires in Belfast and other cities.
Rep. Wilbur D. Mills faced laughter and applause at a Little Rock Jaycee event as he admitted his error after the Tidal Basin incident. He said he should not have drunk champagne and quipped about not drinking any beverage while recounting his past experiences.
Nixon's lawyer says he could testify in person within three weeks if health allows. An electronic recording of Nixon’s conversations continues to be used in the Watergate cover-up trial.
Boston schools reported higher attendance and fewer violence incidents as the city neared the end of a fifth week of desegregation bus integration. Senator Edward W. Brooke began work on a long-range proposal.
Richard Peter Johnson was released on a $25,000 bond and faced charges of stealing an airplane. He stood on the US soil proclaiming, I am a free man again, after four years in a Cuban jail.
The forecast calls for near zero rain today and tomorrow with clear Sunday. Aiken County may see upper 70s today, followed by a mid-40s overnight drop. Sunday is described as quite cool with mild sunshine returning.
Ricky Tullis 21, sustained facial eye and esophageal burns after a jelly glass of caustic lye was thrown during a Majik Market robbery on Richland Avenue. He remains in undetermined condition as doctors assess eye involvement and overall damage while authorities review the incident.

Federal District Court in Virginia hears case against Charles A. Schafer and his son Sam R. Schafer of North Augusta. Charles A. Schafer pleads guilty to three counts. Sam R. Schafer’s charges are dropped. Schafer to be sentenced next Friday.
Halfway through the United Way campaign, totals reach $189,564 or 53 percent of a $356,253 goal. Harvey Allen tops his division with $132,000 from Savannah River Plant employees, surpassing his 12 percent over goal.
In the October General Sessions Court 124 people were fined or sentenced after guilty pleas or verdicts on 135 of 181 indictments. Fifty three indictments were nolle pros’d by Second Circuit Solicitor C LaVaun Fox. Plea bargaining reduced serious charges such as rape or murder to lighter counts. Five trials yielded guilty verdicts, three for traffic offenses in absentia. Driving under the influence led with 38 indictments this term.
Ford told a House Judiciary subcommittee and a national TV audience there was no deal in the Nixon pardon. He said he was surprised by possible disclosures and that the first pardon mention came from Haig nine days before Nixon resigned. The panel debated continuing the inquiry with more witnesses.
