Death penalty trial delayed for David Mark Hill

Circuit Judge Marc Westbrook halted the September 1996 capital case after concluding the Aiken County jury pool was too familiar with the slayings of three DSS workers at the North Augusta satellite office. The trial is rescheduled for January with a jury to be drawn from another county. Hill is accused in the shootings of Timmy Riddle Josie Curry and Michael Gregory during a child custody dispute.

Family tragedy fuels fight against video poker addiction

Kathie Fowler argues her family’s ruin stems from her daughter’s video poker addiction. Over four years the daughter stole from relatives to feed the habit, pawned jewelry, forged checks, and even broke into the home. After an August incident charges were filed and the daughter was arrested following a bank affidavit of forgery.

Aiken legislators pledge No to video poker relief

Seven members of the Aiken County legislative delegation signed a pledge vow to uphold the South Carolina Supreme Court ban on video poker and vote against any attempts by the industry to secure relief. The pledge was presented by Sen. Greg Ryberg and will be read at a rally at the Statehouse.

He warns of no legal action if lawmakers do not reopen the matter and believes a referendum would have let citizens vote on video poker. Martin says the referendum was the fairest path to decide the issue and expresses sympathy for industry workers.
