Patricia Roberts Harris captured the temporary chairmanship as the Democratic National Committee defeated reformer Senator Harold E. Hughes of Iowa. Hughes had backed by three presidential hopefuls but lost by 72 to 31, per UPI.
New York AP report shows the United States paid out 3.1 billion in gold and reserve assets to foreign central banks in eight months of 1971. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York calls the reserves severely eroded despite 3.6 billion in record short term credit draw ings to stem losses, noting swap drawings absorb temporary foreign dollar gains.
Washington weighs reactions after Chile's three day old decision not to reimburse Kennecott and Anaconda for expropriation. The State Department calls the move deeply disappointing and disturbing while delaying concrete punitive steps against Chile's 11 month old Allende government.
Secretary of State William P. Rogers meets with Foreign Minister Abba Eban in New York to press U S proposals for an interim air safety arrangement. An Israeli source cites focus on bilateral issues and a preference for Phantom jets. The Soviet Union provided Eban with a talking point.
Washington AP reports former Secretary of State Dean Acheson died at 78 of an apparent heart attack at his Sandy Spring Maryland home. Acheson was praised worldwide for postwar diplomacy aiding US Japanese friendship. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Washington Cathedral with private burial to follow.
Former first lady remarks on Ike's fondness for Abilene as crowds gather for rededication of the Eisenhower Museum on his 81st birthday anniversary. Eisenhower died in 1969 and is buried in Abilene.
Gov. John West faces a sharp setback as the South Carolina Senate votes 20 to 14 to accept an amendment by Sen. Jack Lindsay that preserves more roadside signs than federal guidelines allow. The move risks losing $4.5 million in federal funds and could prompt a veto after extended debate and a session pause.
Two North Carolina prison escapees, Winfred Roscoe Stinson and Jimmy Al Jones, were captured after a high speed chase across Columbia. Investigators say they are being questioned in connection with an armed robbery of a Columbia food store.
Weeping 24 year old Faye Cato identified defendants William Holland and Denny Davis as men who bound and gagged her during a double murder at a Belvedere motorcycle clubhouse on June 18. She described tying and threats, testifying amid cross examination about orders from others. Holland, who joined the Tribulators in February, testified he acted under orders during the incident.
The Associated Press reports price increases for 1972 models from Volkswagen and Datsun, aided by a 10 percent import surcharge. VW raises the Super Beetle by 145 dollars to 2278 including surcharge. Datsun raises the 1200 to 2114. American minicars will list 1919 for the Pinto, 2040 for the Gremlin, and 2075 for the Vega.
The South Carolina Public Service Commission completed testimony in favor of a 12 percent rate hike for Southern Bell customers. If approved, one party residential bills rise about $1 and business accounts about $2.25 monthly. Dewey Duckett Jr. is the sole opponent registered with the PSC.
TEC Executive Director C. Stanley Smith says South Carolina's Technical Education program is one of the state's best investments as TEC seeks a 5.2 million budget increase. The TEC testifying before the Budget and Control Board highlights defense of costs against other agencies. The TEC presentation comes with three other state departments proposing budgets for the next fiscal year.
