Former Secretary of State Dean Acheson died Tuesday night at his Sandy Spring Maryland home. He was 78 and had left office 18 years earlier. The death appeared due to a heart attack while he sat at his desk.
Viet Cong sappers blew up two U.S. helicopters and damaged three more eight miles northeast of Saigon. North Vietnamese fired two SAMs at an American reconnaissance plane and escorts over North Vietnam. missiles missed and no retaliation occurred.
Vice President Spiro Agnew said the United States cannot be the policeman of the world as he prepared to fly to Iran for celebrations of the Persian monarchy. Turkish officials described the talks as promising and encouraged by the results of two days of conferences.
Sgt. John C. Sexton Jr. was released from captivity near the Cambodia Vietnam border and reunited with his parents in Aurora Colorado. He arrived aboard a military medical evac jet and was taken to Fitzsimons General Hospital in weak condition after a 26 month POW ordeal. Sexton is the 22nd U.S. prisoner released by the Viet Cong in ten years.
The Japan Textile Federation said it will oppose the government’s move to negotiate a textile agreement with the United States. A Nationalist Chinese government official traveled to Washington to sign such an act, and the federation vowed to oppose the decision to the very end.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg school board will give students a day off Friday so they can watch President Nixon and evangelist Billy Graham ride together in the presidential limousine during a downtown Charlotte motorcade.

The chief was freed on recognizance and will return to duty Monday as an investigation continues into motive and context.
Washington reports Nixon will attend a Moscow summit conference in May. U S officials and diplomats say the plan follows improving American Russian relations since Nixon took office. Brezhnev had earlier hinted at a possible trip.
A six member compromise committee sought to resolve the sharp House Senate differences in the South Carolina reapportionment bill. Chairman Sen. Marion Gressette warned progress hinges on granting free conference powers.
The younger brother of defendant Osgood Leland testified that he drove his brother and two other defendants to the Belvedere motorcycle clubhouse the night of the killings. He described interactions with club members including a man called Juicer and the two girls outside, and said he was ordered out of the clubhouse and later drove back to Charleston.
John N Bancroft 64 of 1108 Valley Green Drive SW died Tuesday at Aiken County Hospital after a brief illness. A Du Pont Co veteran of 30 years, he worked in the Savannah River Plant personnel department. Born in Philadelphia, he moved to Aiken in 1952 and was a member of St Thaddeus Episcopal Church and the Aiken Lions Club. Survived by widow Elizabeth Gray Bancroft and three sons, plus siblings. Funeral arrangements pending with George Funeral Home.
Gov. John West urged a substantial teacher pay raise for next year while keeping open the possibility of tax increases. He announced a $2 million federal grant for a welfare-to-work program in Greenville, Charleston, Orangeburg, and Horry counties, with voluntary in two counties and mandatory in two.
