In a three part series the Aiken Standard outlines home fire risks and prevention measures. NFPA data show furniture and cigarettes as top causes in 3955 fatal fires in one to two family homes with 8800 deaths. Emphasis on prevention and escape plans, with tomorrow's focus on public buildings.
Betty Galardi has returned home from the hospital after a heart attack several weeks ago. Myron Bell and Doug Staton are noted as student Rotarian of the Month and the visiting student at the meeting respectively. The two groups discuss weather weekend football games and the lunch quality.
The forecast shows a warming trend with daytime highs near 80 degrees. Tonight will be mild with a mid 50s low and partly cloudy skies. Expect a 10 percent chance of rain tonight and 20 percent Thursday as highs reach the upper 70s to 80. From Friday to Sunday mild weather continues with 70s days and 50s to low 60s nights.
Aiken public forum drew about 100 people as Marshall Cain and Rep. Irene Rudnick sparred on effectiveness and redistricting. Rudnick cited Greenville ratings while Cain showed a 1977 score. Rudnick argued mid term evaluation is unfair and highlighted constituent outreach.
In Aiken County General Sessions court the prosecution outlined its case against Francis Arthur Downs's wife Mrs. Downs for murder. The defense relies on house defense and self defense, citing a harmful confrontation over custody of their 3 year old son. Aiken County investigator Ronald Gunter testified about Mrs. Downs statement detailing the night of the shooting and the sequence leading to Downs being shot as he walked toward the house.
Senate backed tax measure moves to conference as negotiators race the calendar and a veto risk. The plan would cut 1979 taxes by 29.3 billion with broad individual relief, capital gains cuts, and business relief, while Carter presses for a compromise closer to House figures.
Rep. Cecil L. Collins, R North Augusta, seeks a third term in House District 83 stating he runs on his record. He highlights support for law enforcement, sunset laws, mandatory armed robbery sentences, capital punishment and consumer advocacy, noting his conservative constituency shapes his votes.
Demo Huff campaigns door to door in Belvedere for the 83rd House seat opposing Rep. Cecil L. Collins. The 28 year old says the contest centers on accountability and effective representation and promises a true alternative.
