Horseplay unveils 31 art horses at Aiken gala

The Aiken Center for the Arts hosted a Thursday gala where 31 Horseplay sculptures were revealed to sponsors artists and guests as a preview for the Saturday Horseplay Unveiled Street Festival. Proceeds benefit ArtPlay aiding seniors and children in the community. Sponsors discussed their horses and a new calendar featuring the artworks.

Woman charged after threatening officials in Beech Island standoff

Sherry Blackwell, 36, of Beech Island’s Hollow Creek Farm Road, faced charges of pointing and presenting a firearm after an hours long confrontation with emergency responders. Deputies and SWAT members arrived as officers heard the rifle being loaded. Medics initially treated her at Aiken Regional Medical Centers before booking her at the detention center.

DNA ruling may affect local murder case

The 9th Circuit ruling could influence the case against accused killer Robert Atkins in the 2000 death of Jessica Carpenter. Atkins was identified as the prime suspect by a DNA sample from a Georgia felon. South Carolina law requires DNA from convicted sex offenders for the state database. Lt. Ira Jeffcoat heads the SLED DNA lab. The CODIS system links state data to national records. State prosecutors seek the death penalty for Atkins.

Domestic violence deaths seen high in counties

The Cumbee Center cites 2001 statistics placing Aiken and Spartanburg counties atop the state in domestic violence deaths, with South Carolina leading the nation in women killed by partners. Four local deaths and 64 statewide, as experts warn of rising numbers without prevention, and 1,692 clients served in 2002.
