Horseplay Unveiled Street Festival Opens Downtown

Aiken hosts the Horseplay Unveiled Street Festival Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Newberry Festival Site in front of the Washington Center for the Performing Arts with the public unveiling at 12:30 p.m. A gala viewing tonight at the Aiken Center for the Arts sold out, fundraiser proceeds support Artplay scholarships for children and seniors. The event features live music by Savannah River Grass and Preston and Weston, a food court under $5, and Horseplay merchandise sales. Proceeds aim to reach about $150,000 funding five years of programs, with a March 19 Gala Auction and Party preceding the Aiken Steeplechase.

State tests expanded for grades three to eight

Education officials announced that all students in grades 3 through 8 must take four state mandated exams next year. Budget disputes had previously limited testing to two grades per subject but the plan was reversed to meet the higher stakes requirements.

Ceremony remembers Aiken County DV victims from 2002

Four Aiken County women killed in domestic violence cases in 2002 were honored in a State House ceremony in Columbia. Frances DuBose died at 49 after a husband’s gun attack that also claimed their 13 year old son. Sheryl Lloyd, 35, was stabbed by her husband, who is jailed awaiting trial. Denise Simpkins, 35, died in a live-in boyfriend attack.
