End of the costliest Atlantic hurricane season in history
The 2005 season set records with 26 named storms and 13 hurricanes including Katrina, Rita, and Wilma. Katrina caused catastrophic Mississippi and New Orleans flooding. Wilma intensified rapidly in the Caribbean. Estimates of rebuilding costs reach up to 200 billion dollars with 62 billion approved in relief. The Bush administration ordered a broad review of disaster plans.
