Waste facility reaches 2000th high level canister milestone
The processing facility at Savannah River Site marks a milestone with the 2000th high level waste canister filled since 1996. Glass vitrification combines waste with borosilicate glass, poured into a large stainless container. The canisters head to the Glass Waste Storage building with 2286 capacity. A new storage building, due March 21 2006, will meet site needs through 2020. DOE says the facility may not be needed until late 2006. The team at DWPF notes strong performance and disciplined operations as crucial to moving waste from tanks to immobilization.
