Preservation minded buyer safeguards James Island Civil War earthwork
Peter Evans bought an 8.5 acre James Island tract including Fort Pemberton earthwork near Charleston. He plans to place a conservation easement on the earthwork and adjacent fields to restrict future use while selling a few lots to fund taxes and preserve the historic site. Built 1863 with no battles, the fort sits near the Stono River and is on the National Register since 1978.
