The Associated Press counts seventeen traffic fatalities on South Carolina roads during the long Thanksgiving weekend. Victims include nine year old John Mayor of Orangeburg and drivers James Calvin Alewine of Donalds Johnny Thurmond Miller of Charlotte Anthony Dale Johnson of Abbeville Randall Whaley of Eastover Joe Atwell Henry Driggers and Larry Stevens among others in Calhoun Hampton Allendale Berkeley and Richland counties. The period ran from 6 p m Wednesday to midnight Monday.

Drill Sergeant Trial To Begin At Fort Jackson
Sgt. 1st Class Lawrence Chapman Jr. of Pickens faces trial on involuntary manslaughter dereliction of duty and maltreatment charges in the heat stroke deaths of two recruits last June. Sgt. Willie Alexander of Timmonsville also charged. his trial is set for December 4. Both pleaded not guilty.
