VA chief warns budget delay could stall VA claims progress
VA Secretary Anthony Principi warns that a stalled federal budget could jeopardize gains in reducing the disability and pension backlog. He notes staffing rose to about 1,200 to cut backlogs from 600,000 in March and plans to add 190 more, including registered nurses, but may halt hiring if funding isn’t approved by February. Fiscal 2001 ended with total claims down to 470,206 and disability claims dropping from 422,905 to 348,702.
