A rapidly growing wildfire jumped from 12 acres to 14 000 in a day, advancing three miles into Los Angeles from northern mountains. It destroyed or damaged at least 13 homes as hot winds up to 50 mph pushed it southwest. Evacuations stretched across city and foothill areas near Glendale and unincorporated zones.
In a dramatic morning development two of five guards held by inmates on Rikers Island were released about 8 a.m. after discussions involving Bronx District Attorney Mario Merola and inmate representatives.
In New York some Pan American World Airways reservation clerks walked off the job as the Airline Division of the Teamsters Union prepared picket lines. A union spokesman said workers were told not to report to work, while Pan Am denied a strike and said negotiations continue.
Nine oil companies expressed interest in offshore oil exploration from Cape Fear North Carolina to Cape Canaveral Florida. The two favored areas lie 60 miles east of Brunswick Georgia and 68 miles off Charleston South Carolina. The South Atlantic lease is planned for next November with thirteen responses, including support from South Carolina Georgia and Florida officials. One group, the Coastal Environmental Coalition of Charleston, opposed offshore drilling citing risks to shrimping fishing and wildlife and potential spills.
The collision between the US aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy and the cruiser Belknap near Naples Italy caused ammunition explosions and fires. Four men were killed four missing and 16 injured. five seriously. David Vollmer of Waupaca Wisconsin was aboard the Belknap when the blasts and fires occurred.
In Madrid Franco was interred in a monumental tomb he built for himself and Civil War dead as over 100,000 rightists saluted with fascist salutes and sang the Falange hymn. Aiken County attorneys say they have no comment on the legality of four commissioners receiving 100 dollars monthly travel expenses. The report shows Lucas Ray L Vernon Davis Forest L Kirby and Charles W Prosser each claiming 500 dollars for July through November. The legality hinges on whether the mileage reimbursement in the July budget ordinance constitutes a raise under the 1972 act.

Catawba Timber Co halted burning on 30 acres after a DHEC order in Wagener. Environmental quality manager James B. Spears said the company will not burn again until a less noxious method is found. Rep M Judson Busbee had filed the complaint after smoke hung over the area. Citizens within five miles reported concerns.
