French Lick Indiana AP reports President Nixon will be entered in New Hampshire’s leadoff primary on March 7. Governor Walter Peterson says Nixon has overwhelming Republican support there but should campaign in person to boost strength in the first primary.
In central Tokyo a group of radical students with fire bombs burned two restaurants in a park near Hibiya and the Imperial Palace. A guard collapsed and died of a heart attack while police said 15 officers and 10 civilians were injured in clashes around Tokyo as protests against U.S. Okinawa policy intensified.
Actress Barbara Stanwyck, 64, is admitted to St John’s Hospital in Santa Monica for observation after illness and exhaustion. The move suspends production on the television film Fitzgerald and Pride in which she stars.
A court hearing in Birmingham was to decide whether to lift a shutdown order on 23 industries issued by U.S. District Judge Sam G. Pointer under the Clean Air Act. Weather and temperature inversions drove a regional pollution crisis as winds shifted ahead of a cold front. John White of the EPA said enforcement staff would decide shortly before the hearing whether to request lifting the order.
