Ferry Sinks Near Leyte Cebu Killing 199 Students?

An inter island ferry with about 200 aboard sank Sunday night between Leyte and Cebu. One survivor reported ashore on a plank, two Coast Guard ships searched, and the Bethoven II vanished in rough seas near Capitancillo and Calangaman while returning students packed the boat.

Safety Council predicts Thanksgiving highway toll

The National Safety Council estimates 620 to 720 deaths and 27 000 to 32 000 injuries on highways during the 102 hour Thanksgiving weekend. It notes 651 fatalities in 1970 and an AP tally of 646, with the record toll 764 set in 1968.

Capone’s Car Fetches 37000 At Niagara Falls Auction

A bulletproof Cadillac sedan that once belonged to Al Capone and later served Franklin D. Roosevelt sold for 37000 at an Antique Auto Museum auction in Niagara Falls Ontario. The museum, closing its doors, offered 43 vintage cars with the Lincoln Continental of 1963 bringing 29000 in a private sale to a collector. Roosevelt reportedly rode in the Cadillac for safety features including self sealing tires and tubes.

Anniversary Observed at Kennedy Plaza in Dallas

A ceremony marking the eighth anniversary of President Kennedy's assassination was to be held at Kennedy Plaza in downtown Dallas. Three clergymen joined Mayor Wes Wise in wreath laying and brief remarks, near the Warren Commission site. sponsored by the Greater Dallas Council of Churches.

Scandal widens over Illinois race track stock scheme

Chicago reports say Illinois officials allegedly fixed racing dates and that jockeys gamblers and trainers at Chicago area tracks may face federal charges. U S planes back a fresh South Vietnamese ground push into eastern Cambodia. More than 5,000 troops moved north toward Highway 7 near Chrum while air strikes claimed 40 enemy deaths. The Aiken Choral Society under Coile Scarborough directed forty six voices in four parts for a lively program at Aiken Junior High auditorium. Ed Burchfield and John R. Scott offered commentary while soloists Nancy Watts Grayson Hanes and others starred. The concert featured Handel Haydn sacred and popular tunes with varied instrumental support and concludes with praise for local arts.

Asbil Hutto Denies Political Ambitions Resigns as Chief Deputy

Chief Deputy Asbil Hutto of the Aiken County Sheriff's Department resigned Saturday after serving since January 1965 under Sheriff Paul Grant. Hutto said he has no political ambitions and left due to lack of cooperation and communication with the sheriff. Sheriff Grant made no comment.
